Overview

The Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program (EHPMP) addresses environmental health challenges associated with mercury use in artisanal small-scale gold mining and e-waste, and environmental health challenges associated with unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants. Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), it is implemented in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia. The World Bank Group has been tasked to spearhead the initiative, using a regional approach to find holistic and coordinated solutions. EHPMP aims to strengthen institutional partnerships, promote learning and knowledge exchange, and support the five countries to meet their commitment to various international treaties such as the Minamata Convention, Stockholm Convention, as well as the Basel and Rotterdam Convention.

What We Do

What we do is embedded in three main components:

1. Regional platform for regional partnerships and policy dialogue
EHPMP facilitates coordination among the five participating countries. A regional platform makes possible dialogue and stocktaking to advance the sound management of chemicals and hazardous waste. Regular regional meetings and workshops bring together countries, partners, and experts to address mercury use and POPs exposure, exchange knowledge, build capacity, and present best practices to improve policy regulations and frameworks.

2.Knowledge management
Knowledge management and communication EHPMP promotes and facilitates learning for the implementation of the country programs. It supports activities disseminating and scaling up best practices from country projects and facilitate south-south cooperation.

3.Program implementation and coordination
This component helps coordinate the EHPMP through stakeholder consultation at the national and regional levels.
